Mount Pleasant and the surrounding areas have some of the best golf courses in the country and an average of 230 sunny days a year in which to enjoy them. Four Mount Pleasant courses are open to the public. Patriot’s Point, the most convenient golf course to downtown Charleston, offers spectacular views of the Charleston Harbor. On the northern edge of the city is the award winning Rees Jones course at Charleston National Country Club. The Dunes West Golf Club, on the site of historic Lexington Plantation, is a nationally acclaimed golf facility, ranked by both Golf Magazine and Golf Digest as a "Top Ten New Resort Course." The new Arnold Palmer designed course at Rivertown Country Club was named among the “Places to Play” by Golf Digest. Two spectacular courses in Wild Dunes Resort on nearby Isle of Palms attract a steady flow of golfers year round.
For recreation, a variety of water activities is also available, including everything from swimming, sailing, boating, fishing and kayaking to harbor cruises and coastal excursions. The Sunset Harbor Cruise and the boat trip to historical Fort Sumter are experiences not to be missed. Neither are Mount Pleasant’s excellent restaurants, including several that face picturesque Shem Creek and its collection of working shrimp boats that dock there. For the cooks, fresh seafood is readily available right off the boats. Mount Pleasant’s inviting Farmer’s Market is open each Tuesday from mid-April to mid-October for locally grown fresh fruits, vegetables and other enticing items.
The 943-acre Palmetto Islands County Park is a favorite attraction for young and old alike, featuring a water park with water slides, paddle boats, picnic areas, ball fields and fishing docks. The city's sports complex boasts five multi-purpose fields for recreation, including an NCAA soccer field, a men's NCAA baseball field, an NCAA women's softball field, nine tennis courts and a jogging and exercise trail, as well as athletic and concession buildings, restrooms and training rooms.
Mount Pleasant is a city steeped in tradition. For instance, it is one of the only places in the United States where Sweetgrass basket-making is practiced. This West Africa traditional art has been featured in the Lowcountry for more than 300 years—passed on from generation to generation—making it one of the oldest art forms of African origin in the United States.
Mount Pleasant attractions include Boone Hall Plantation with its nine original slave cabins, original smoke house, original cotton gin (now housing a restaurant and gift shop), beautiful gardens, and of course the famous Avenue of Oaks which was planted in 1743. Maritime and naval history are on view at Patriot’s Point, home to the WWII aircraft carrier Yorktown, the submarine Camagore, the Coast Guard cutter Ingham, a collection of vintage military aircraft, and the Medal of Honor Museum.
In addition to all that it has to offer, Mount Pleasant is just across the spectacular new Arthur Ravenel suspension bridge. The symphony, the ballet, the theater, world-class restaurants, museums, the aquarium, the world famous Spoleto Arts Festival, the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition are only a few of Charleston’s offerings. And for sports fans, the Charleston area showcases an abundance of spectator sports including professional baseball, ice hockey and soccer, sailing regattas, equestrian events, and the annual Family Circle Cup, which attracts the world’s top women tennis players each year. For the athletes among us, the annual Cooper River Bridge Run begins in Mount Pleasant and ends in Charleston, pitting local runners of all ages against athletes from as far away as Africa.
Mount Pleasant is more than just "pleasant" as its name would suggest. It is quite simply, an ideal place to live, work and play.
